When the nightlife is a job, there’s a higher chance of divorce

Couples in Missouri may be interested in some findings that associate certain occupations with the likelihood of divorce. Data from a 2015 survey shows that people who work in fields that involve travel or nightlife are the most likely to get divorced. Bartenders come out at the top of the list of highest divorce rate by profession.

The data from the 2015 American Community Survey was recently presented by FlowingData. While occupations involving travel, shipping and transportation have the highest divorce rates, the lowest divorce rates are associated with occupations that involve math or science.

One theory is that occupations that require efficiency are likely to attract people who are level-headed and work on set schedules. That could be easier to live with than people in travel or entertainment who have varied schedules. However, money also appears to play a role in divorce rates by occupation. Generally, higher income occupations mean less likelihood of divorce.

In addition to math and science, however, occupations in rural careers such as fishing, farming and forestry are associated with lower divorce rates. The military also has a divorce rate below the national average.

Divorces happen for a wide variety of reasons, but money is one of the most common causes. Individuals who are getting divorced will have to come to agreements on property division, spousal maintenance and child support. Unlike child support, spousal maintenance, sometimes called alimony, has no set formula in Missouri. Judges make determinations on maintenance based on several different factors, including the length of the marriage and the ability of each spouse to work and earn income.
