Divorce and expectation setting

34842907_S (1).jpgIt is understandable that if you have never been through a divorce, you may not have a firm idea of what to expect. You have read books, seen movies or talked friends and relative who have been divorced, but none of that will likely prepare you for your experience of divorce.

Nonetheless, it is important to try and develop the proper expectations before your divorce commences, as that will allow you enter the process your eyes wide open and will minimize your chances of being blindsided or surprised by what goes on during your time in a Missouri family court here in Columbia.

For those with children, it is important to keep in mind with any parenting plan or custody agreement is that it must be realistic and viable. If you put in long hours at work and/or travel a great deal, you may find that it is difficult to create a 50/50 shared custody agreement that actually will work in practice.

Another point frequently mentioned by divorce attorneys is that you and your attorney will always understand all of the elements and factors in your case better than your judge will. And you have much greater interest in the outcome than the court, as you will have to live with the terms of the final agreement.

The judge may hear motions for two or three other family law cases in a day, so it is in your interest to not have to rely on the judge to fix the difficult portions of your case. The courts are in great demand, dockets are full and delays are common, so developing solutions with your attorney can save time waiting for a court date, and allow you to obtain your final agreement more quickly.

At the Stange Law Firm, we work to ensure that you understand each stage of the proceedings and that you know what to expect. We know this is likely your first time in family court, but we can assure you it is not ours. We understand the courts in Boone County and work to help you feel confident with the process and the progress of your case
