The holidays and your parenting plan

23802365_S.jpgIf you have completed your divorce in the Columbia area and are now getting used to your child custody arrangement or parenting plan on a day-to-day basis, you should note that the first of a string of holidays is coming up soon. Halloween arrives this weekend, and it may be your first experience with your children and dealing with the realities of shared child custody.

What's in a name?

3601402_S.jpgDivorce will bring many changes to your life. Some are expected, such as no longer living with your spouse, and needing to assume many of the duties and responsibilities your spouse may have handled when you were married. Some may be not-so-expected. But the more you think through those potential changes before your divorce is final, the better you can set your expectations and those of others.

Are you sure you checked everything off?

9969051_S.jpgOne reason you want to work with an attorney during a divorce is their experience. They have gone through the process many times. Maybe not personally, but as an attorney they are likely to have handled many divorces. And not only is their perspective not clouded by emotions of sadness or anger, they have the advantage of having seen the process multiple times.

Divorce: the goal is to successfully settle

20983933_S.jpgMost divorce agreements in Missouri are negotiated settlements between the two parties. Divorces are typically settled because going through with a courtroom trial can be very time consuming and expensive. Since the economic consequence of a divorce can be sufficiently problematic, there are few instances where a trial would be seen as cost effective.

Why you probably don't want DIY divorce

13725420_S.jpgIf you and your spouse have decided to divorce, you know money is going to be an issue. Both the cost of filings the divorce paperwork in the courthouse in Columbia and the need to split up your marital assets. Perhaps you figure that if you handle the legal documents and avoid hiring an attorney, you can at least save that cost in the process.
