Prenup expected to guide Pitt/Jolie divorce

18620693_S.jpgAlthough most Missouri divorces do not make headlines like the split between actors Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, many involve complicated property division issues. Many observers have assumed that Pitt and Jolie executed a prenuptial agreement prior to their marriage in 2014, but if so, the terms of the document have not been made public.

The high-profile couple possesses sizable fortunes and have six children. In her divorce filing, Jolie expressed her desire for full custody of the children. If Pitt attempts to gain joint custody, a dispute could erupt and prolong the divorce process.

The earnings of each actor before they got married could be expected to remain in their separate possession as non-marital property. According to figures gathered by Forbes, Pitt earned $315.5 million for his movie roles since 2004 when he met Jolie while filming "Mr. & Mrs. Smith." For the past 11 years, Jolie has reportedly made $239.5 million. Legal observers expect the terms of the prenuptial agreement, if it exists, to determine how their income and other assets obtained since their marriage would be divided.

Although celebrity watchers anticipate that Pitt and Jolie will attempt to conclude their divorce as soon as possible, they have many issues to sort out just like any couple. A person wh o is facing the end of a marriage may want to meet with a family law attorney at the outset, especially if issues like parental relocation or spousal support are expected to cause contentious disputes. In many cases, the attorney can start negotiating a settlement agreement that once signed can be submitted to the court for its approval.
