Getting additional child support for tuition

On behalf of Stange Law Firm, PC posted in child support on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

Missouri parents who have school-aged children for whom they receive child support sometimes want them to have the benefit of private school educations. The parents might wonder whether or not they can request an increase in child support in order to get help with their children’s private school tuition.

If you have a child that you believe needs additional educational support because of his or her extraordinary needs, it is possible that the court might grant your request for an increase in child support. If you simply want your child to enroll in private school because of your preference, you may not be successful, however.

Even if you just prefer private school over public school, it is possible that you might be able to negotiate with your child’s other parent for an increase in child support to help with the tuition. If you are not able to resolve your matter amicably, however, you might have to file a motion with the court and request the increase. You would then need to take the matter to a hearing before a judge for a determination of your request.

At our firm, we understand the importance of a good educational foundation for our clients’ children. We work to help our clients reach agreements with their children’s other parents in order to try to secure help with private school tuition along with child support agreements. If we are unable to negotiate successful resolutions of our clients’ cases, we are unafraid to take their cases through litigation before the family law courts. If you have questions about your child’s educational needs and the child support that you receive, you might want to review the information that we have compiled on our private school tuition page.
