Assembling a support team during divorce

39243747_S.jpgWhen couples in Missouri are getting a divorce, they might want to seek emotional support from friends and family. A therapist might also be able to assist in this. For financial and legal issues, a person may want to hire a financial adviser and an attorney.

A financial adviser who has a background in matrimonial finance might be able to help people with different stages of the divorce process. At the beginning, the person might need to assemble a financial history. When the couple negotiates the terms of the divorce and property division, a financial adviser may be helpful in evaluating various options. After the divorce, some people also need assistance in rebuilding their financial lives on a single income.

People might be able to obtain recommendations for an attorney from friends and family members. However, it might also be important to speak to several attorneys and decide which one is best suited for a person's particular set of circumstances. Criteria a person might look for include having some experience in the type of divorce the person is going through and feeling personally comfortable with the attorney. The latter could be important since the two may be working together for a long time.

Unless the couple has a prenuptial agreement, they will have to negotiate an agreement about property division. If they have children, they will also need to reach an agreement on child custody and visitation. If one person earned significantly more than the other, that person might owe alimony to the other. The noncustodial parent may also be required to pay child support to the custodial parent. It may be possible to work out most aspects of the divorce agreement in negotiations instead of going to court. Couples may be more satisfied with this approach since it might allow them more input into the result.
